You can for past crimes, not future crimes.

            The whole statement: https://lemmy.world/c/lemmyworld

            About the manifesto

If it’s confirmed, I don’t see why not. Depends on the community, of course. I’m sure !lemmybewholesome would remove it.

To determine whether or not an accused individual is guilty there are two primary options in the USA. A trial before a judge who makes the decision, or a trial by a “jury of your peers” where the whole jury must agree that the individual is guilty. A jury of one’s peers means that the people selected to hear the case are selected from the general populace and have no substantial connection to the accused. For example, you wouldn’t put the person’s mother on the jury. The jurors are not required to be lawyers or experts in any field. Just average people.

If you just wanted some people to take the facts of the case and the facts of the law and determine whether or not the accused was guilty, then you would want experts and lawyers on the jury. That’s how trials used to be hundreds of years ago. A judge, often appointed by a king, would pass sentence over the peons brought before him. Since our legal system has average everyday people as jurors, clearly they are supposed to do more than that.

This is where jury nullification comes in. The jurors not only judge based on the facts of the case, but also on whether or not the law in question is just. If an individual is accused of a crime, and is clearly in violation of the law, the juror can still find them not guilty if the law in question is unjust. In essence, the jurors nullify the law by refusing to convict. For example, during the prohibition era, it was not unheard of for juries to return not guilty verdicts for people accused of selling or transporting alcohol. The jurors thought the laws was were wrong so they refused to convict. A much more tragic example was in the deep south where jurors would sometime refuse to convict people of lynching black people.

            !lemmyworld

We have previously asked moderators to remove content relating to jury nullification when this was suggested in context of murder or other violent crimes. Following a discussion in our team we want to clarify that we are no longer requesting moderators to remove content relating to jury nullification in the context of violent crimes when the crime in question already happened. We will still consider suggestions of jury nullification for crimes that have not (yet) happened as advocation for violence, which is violating our terms of service.

Not true - we’re just not allowed to discuss jury nullification in the context of encouraging someone to commit a violent felony which includes the promise of absolution through jury nullification.

Or something, idk. It was kinda weird.

Jury nullification as two English words that can be spoken one after the other, however, is perfectly allowable.

Reddit has come forth saying they will not tolerate mods that try to destroy communities like it happened before. If a mod deleted their account, someone else will take their place. If a mod deleted a popular subreddit, Reddit will restore it and ban the mod. Deleting their account does literally nothing.

Communities become ghosttown shitholes when the moderators work against good faith discourse.

Not the same day new shill mods are installed, but within a few months. It poisons everything.

Banning the creators/mods of a sub is banning the people that care most about that sub, and tends to lead to installing mods that are just looking to flex power, which makes the posts and discourse toothless, repetitive, and uninsightful, which makes regulars look for a new home, if they themselves are not banned for failing to regurgitate the only correct opinions as endorsed by the new mods tasked with bringing order.

Uhh…so you know language is like, a social construct, right? As people have come to realize, “spaz” was originally used to describe people with “spastic” movements from conditions like spastic paralysis or cerebral palsy, it’s fallen out of favour.

That’s all. No one is trying to control you or suppress your language. It’s just not a great word, and the language you choose reflects on your perceived character by others.

          platform enshittification

It was called Eternal September back from Usenet days when the Internet was mainly an academic thing and every September old users braced for an influx of freshmen starting new academic year and getting access to newsgroups. I was aware shit was reddit’s final form even back in 2006. I’m actually surprised the shareholders left it unmolested for so long.

It also refers to a more subversive methodology of the powers at be to suppress information that they don’t agree with and deem harmful to the status quo, i.e. Luigi’s manifesto. It’s a multi layered statement that really is applicable to situations.

The thing it’s referring to in this instance is the fact that Reddit is not allowing freedom of speech under the guise of whatever reason it says it has and having that decision protected because it is a private company worried about its own interests.

The fact that so many social media sites have to restrict this sort of thing just goes to show what most people think about this situation. So satisfying to watch.

well damn, did not realize that dead ceos and insurance company owners are now equivalent of “sick kids” within the US power structure.

Hold on, let’s test that hypothesis

Those kids with blood cancer deserved it!

Now let’s see how many downvotes this comment gets. If it gets heavily downvoted, then all hail our leukemic overlords.

This absolutely the right lesson to learn here. Who cares if you can’t discuss it (not literally)? We already know the American people agree. We now need to take the next step to unify the working class and organize so we can coordinate our efforts and exercise actual political power

If this isn’t the spark, considering the momentum it has, nothing will ever “get French” for them.

For a supposedly gun infested and ultra violent country, there is an eerie calm lasting for decades.

Most probably this was a one time thing?

I feel it’s more like ‘nothing ever happens until it does’ statement that I read about. Basically there is a lot of build up that seems like nothing is happening. Then it reaches critical mass and things change. Think the US civil war. The US wasn’t going to free slaves. There was more uprisings and events, like John Brown and Nat Turner, and nothing was going to change. Until it did.

The majority of people have been voting for pure privatization of healthcare, any “uprising” in the shithole USA over this would be minor.

The beauty of the civil rights movement was that on the one side you had the peaceful protests, the disobedience pointing at the other side where activists wanting the same thing and more weren’t so peaceful. The peaceful protesters were the compromise. The alternative was a black revolution, the black panthers, Malcom X etc.

Even those who don’t want a full French Revolution right now should at least push for peaceful protest. We need this “or else” approach. We shouldn’t let it go to waste.

You know that one ended with the reign of terror followed by the crowining of a monarch that then embroiled the entire European continent in war, right?

You know it ended millenniums of monarchy and bought in democracy?

Some people are willing to make risks to see change and improvements. The others are called conservatives.

I think it was a good thing in the long run, I’d just like people to temper their bloodlust a bit, lest we fail to learn any lessons from the past. It’s easy to let righteous indignation morph into something distinct but just as shitty as the thing it replaced.
