In fairness, July and August weren’t inserted, they were renamed from Quintilis and Sextilis, literally the fifth and sixth months of the Roman calendar.

Much earlier, Pompilius (history about whom is largely legendary, and actions attributed to him should be taken with a grain of salt) introduced January and February and set the numbering out of line. These months were previously just lumped in as monthless winter days.

All Julius Caesar did was rebalance the calendar without changing the months. The rename of Quintilis wasn’t even until after he was stabbed.

I’ve used the “writing tools” extensively for minor changes, like changes to capitalization on a large block of text. It makes the phone a little less of a consumption-only device.

I’ve also found the image editing tools handy from time to time, and the automatic calls to ChatGPT on the more complex natural-language questions can sometimes be handy, even if you need to wait a while for the response.

The notification summaries are sometimes very handy and sometimes absurdly incorrect and misleading.

I’m really looking forward to Siri being less frustratingly stupid, but we’ve got a while to wait for that, and we probably shouldn’t set our expectations too high. I do respect that they’ve not shipped it rather than shipping something broken, though.

I’d suggest that language fluency and cultural awareness are probably important for your son to be able to settle in and socialize. Cities in Europe (especially Northern Europe) are likely to be best if he speaks English but no other European language?

Wouldn’t prominent Russians only say stuff like this publicly if they wanted to sow discord? Trump’s words and actions - especially with respect to Ukraine - make it clear that he and Putin are friendly, but statements like this seem like they undermine Trump at a time where it’s beneficial to Russia for him to be supported and further empowered. It confuses me.

I respect everything you’ve written, but the context of the screenshot is seeing someone comment in a general forum, who implicitly identities as cis-het, and publicly weighing the odds that they’re a trans person who hasn’t yet come to that realization. It feels presumptive in a way that doesn’t sit right with me, though I’m not sure I can verbalize it better.

The best parallel I can draw is assuming that a stereotypically camp guy or that a girl who’s a “tomboy” are gay. Yeah, the odds are weighted towards it somewhat, but extrapolating and going “oh ho ho, I know how this ends up” really feels disrespectful and assumptive in a way that feels parallel to misgendering.

Again, it’s possible I’m reacting too strongly.
