  • Most restaurants keep reservations in a $2.75 spiral notebook.

I doubt an online reservation calendar would be $10k for a single restaurant, but still…the only profit is marginal: the people who eat there who would have without the online calendar, and I doubt it would recoup the costs in a quarter or two. Especially considering that the wealth gap and tech gap mean that the number of people who want to schedule online is inversely related to the people who can afford to eat out a lot.

  • When I said “more data than is publicly available now”, did you think I was referring to a title on Lemmy?

The article includes someone they refer to as a “whistleblower”. The analogy with ACORN would be noted liar Jacob Wohl.

The article also includes a statement from FEMA Agency head, Deanne Criswell. I was talking about her when I said “idiot Democrats who fired the accused without even the slightest inquiry”.

On second thought, I’m not sure she’s a Democrat. I assume she was appointed by Biden. But the article does not indicate any sort of inquiry or have a statement from the manager involved.

Are you under the impression that only NC Republicans hate FEMA? This conspiracy theory is decades old. I suspect you are referring to Helene because you are ignorant of the long standing antipathy between Republicans and FEMA.

If you have any reason to believe Republicans aren’t threatening FEMA workers after Milton, feel free to share it. Otherwise, maybe wait for an investigation before jumping to conclusions.

  • No, you should not have any “takeaway” without way more information than is publicly available now. This is the same thing that happened with ACORN: Republicans made a bunch of false accusations and idiot Democrats were way too fast about accepting their premise and firing the accused without even the slightest inquiry into what actually happens. I see we have learned nothing.

My money says this was entirely about keeping their crews safe. It doesn’t make sense for them to just arbitrarily not help Republicans, so I want to hear from the manager before they are pilloried.

  • Democrats spend far too much time and energy pretending everyone to the left of the Democrats are anti-electoralist anarchists.

getting that to happen isn’t as simple as just saying you’re against the genocide, because Harris did that and it wasn’t enough. It isn’t as simple as supporting unions, because she did that and it wasn’t enough. It isn’t as simple as supporting rights for women, minorities, and LGBTQ, because she did that and it wasn’t enough.

Yes. You’re absolutely correct that what the Democrats are doing is not enough. If the DNC can get that through their thick skulls, maybe we have a chance next time.

You can’t just say you support unions.

You can’t just say you’re against genocide.

You have to make people’s lives materially better, and until the Dems choose to do that, we’re in trouble.

  • Sorry if I was unclear. I am a leftist. I care about Gaza. I understand that Gaza was not a winning issue.

I am making a distinction between people who vote third party or don’t vote to send a message and people who don’t vote out of apathy. The former group is small. I don’t think a foreign policy issue will usually swing an election.

I, for one, don’t believe that electoralism will solve our problems. I vote for harm reduction and on the off chance I’m wrong, and because our voices matter a bit more in down ballot races. I’d guess this is the most common position amongst people left of the Dems.

  • You’re talking about two different numbers.

I’m not sure I said “we’re too small to matter”. But exit polls said that 10% of the electorate cared about Gaza. If everyone who abstained from voting due to Gaza had voted for Harris, she still would have lost.

But what I’m trying to tell you is that the issue is not communists, socialist, and anarchists. Agree with us or not but we are deeply involved in politics and extremely tuned in. (Compared to the average American. I think everyone on a political memes channel on Lemmy is at least paying attention. Everyone reading this is an outlier.)

Leftists tend to conflate leftist policies with “policies that help the working class”. I tend to think the latter is a subset of the former. Democrats need to get out and fight for the working class enough to excite people to come to the polls. It’s not leftists that you need to convince to vote, but the people working three jobs and still having trouble with rent who think that politics doesn’t really affect them. By the time you get that person out, Leftists will be over the moon for you.

I did not say anything about burning anything.
