Hard disagree with Adam on this video.

The argument is “there is no replacement” which is wrong.

Re Mastodon, he gets wrong what everyone reporting on Mastodon (and Lemmy) get wrong. “You have to choose and instance and that’s too hard.” When the actual answer is, just pick one. Install the Mastodon app, what’s the default? mastodon.social? Use that. Almost all instances are federated and if you pick a popular one you can see anything you’d realistically care about. If you want to move around later on, go for it. Once you’ve left birdsite you can make moves as needed.

Re Bluesky, it’s invite only, someday it won’t be. It can be part of the conversation but there are alternatives to move to now. Mastodon or…

Re Threads, is an option. It’s better than Twitter, but not by much. It’ll take time to mature but it’ll get better. I don’t think it’s worth moving to, but if the alternative is Twitter then Threads is miles ahead.

In general Twitter is the new Facebook, except more Nazis. No one uses Facebook. Yes some people do, but nothing important happens there. That’s Twitter now.

Yes, let that stop you from watching an informative video to explain why Twitter isn’t actually hemorrhaging users like they should be.

What’s the problem with Adam Conover? Too left wing for you? His being a spokesperson for the strike too pro-labor? His suggestion in the video for a government-regulated Twitter too unfair to Elon? Just curious.

A lot of the things he’s “ruined” have been proven to be false or just using made up facts. And before you make any assumptions, I too am left wing and pro labor. But this guy is just a presenter and should not be elevated higher than such.

Sounds like he can’t puzzle out how to pick a Mastodon server and sign up, which really makes me question his dedication to knowing what the heck he’s talking about.

Good lord you sound like such a stuck up pretentious little fuck. You’re on an anti-Elon Musk community but you have the same exact energy as him.

Adam Conover is a former TV host/YouTuber who has tried to prop himself up as intellectual despite the fact that all of his “intelligence” came from… actually intelligent writers and researchers. Every time he’s spoken candidly he makes a fool of himself, yet his name is still plastered on every bit of content he involves himself in.

For more concrete reasons, I don’t generally like cis white men who try to explain to a trans person that they are describing the trans experience wrong. Or when people go on the Joe Rogan podcast and let themselves get caught off guard so much that they end up making the right’s arguments for them.

Adam Conover: “No, giving hormones treatments to children or young teens isn’t usually a good idea.”

His only argument against mastodon was that it’s too hard to sign up (it isn’t) and then he spends the rest of the video calling for reforms that mastodon provides. It’s currently easier to sign up for mastodon than it is to sign up for twitter.

The no replacement argument simply doesn’t work for me. The actual argument being made isn’t that there’s no replacement, but that the person is addicted to doom scrolling and outrage, and there’s no better source for that.

Conover is being disingenuous: The loss of users at X is greater than he says. This video feels less like breadtube trash and more like a victory lap for his WGA work. Also, he’s touring.

I agree with him the passing of the Telecommunications Act (which pretty much allowed Sinclair to buy up all the news networks) has been a bad thing for everyone. But this is orthogonal to the topic at hand, and I don’t see how seizing X would fix anything. It is more practical to encourage a protocol and mandate some degree of protocol support as a requirement for GSA contracts. We need to be on ActivityPub, period. I also agree its not ‘easy’ to sign up for Mastodon, but “poor user experience” is not something that I am too worried about. If people wanted gone, they would move to an alternative be it Mastodon or Threads.

I also look at this from a “protocols, not products” perspective and I really don’t care if Mastodon or Bsky have high learning curves or won’t have the growth of Threads. These are effective tools to control user quality. I don’t want to be seen by millions of people. Not anymore. That just leads us back to Enshittification at some point.
