Seems like Apple is very much setting themselves up to compete against MS, Sony, and Nintendo for couch gaming.

Until Apple stops being Apple and gives some freedom to devs and publishers, it’s just not going to happen.

My hopes for this are media playback when traveling and using your phone as a mobile desktop which is still one of the things I miss from Samsung — Dex was really nice when I needed it.

For Mobile sure. But your never going to convert a Console or PC gamer to Mobile.

My iPhone (when I get it) will basically just become an extension of my Xbox and PC when I want to do any major Gaming. But, I will still have a few time waster mobile games and now I’ll also have Monster Hunter Now, which is an actually engaging and fun POGO style game.

Sure, for mobile games. But there not going to compete with Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo in the console space. They should probably be treated as separate markets because there is really not much overlap between the two in terms of audiences.

Really depends on how you segment gaming. Apple is constitutionally incapable of doing what it did with AppleTV+ in the gaming segment.

Sure, but to lot of traditional gamers that means as much as saying reality TV is one of the most profitable shows to someone who doesn’t like reality TV.

Even just basic MHL was the bomb for use cases like that back in the day, and then Google axed it because… They wanted to sell more Chromecasts, of course. Seems we can just never have nice things.

I hope there’s some kind of desktop mode when plugged into a monitor. All I ever wanted from a smartphone when it first became a thing was to be able to go into the office. Plug your phone in to do general tasks

My Samsung tabled does that. Same with their phones, it’s called Dex.

You can even use the phone as a trackpad.

      Pretty neat feature, I agree.

Now that I say I always wanted to have this feature I wonder if I’d realistically use it.

Is Dex useful? Have you used it in any regular or useful way?

There are a couple ways in which its useful to me.

First is when I just want a windows-esque interface with lots of floating windows. Especially for Office apps, because they also start looking more like their Windows counterparts. Through tablet itself it may not see that much use, but when connected to an external monitor it’s really nice.

And second is when you want to separate your daily routine with work. Because Dex is visually very different you can use it as a sort of “focus mode”, which works great for me personally.

Although whenever I need to do something more demanding than Excel I tend to just remote to my home PC.

I should also mention that I am studying at a uni, so unless I need to work away from home specifically and if it’s not related to studying then Dex doesn’t get used much and I just stick to conventional means of consuming media.

But I do know people who straight up replaced their PCs with that thing, depends on your use-case scenario.

So wait, does it have a displayport?

Because I saw news saying that some models would have USB-C 2.0, only USB-C 3.2(? FastDelivery) supports monitors. So unless it has a second port there’s no way this is true.

Then there’s no way the non-pro models can use monitors, let alone 4k HDR. Pretty sure even if you power the monitor separately it just doesn’t transfer the data fast enough.

I spent months trying to use a portable monitor with a USB-C 2.0 port until I found out there’s different versions and only 1 actually works for it.

It can. USB C can support DP ALT mode where the pins effectively become DP pins in a USB C connector. I’m guessing data transfer is done via USB2 this and display is in DP ALT. Typically we’ve not seen this as anyone willing to put in ALT modes would want a fast interface too for data transfer, also knowing apple there is something proprietary going on.

The main point is it’s not limited to USB Speeds. The pins can take on other functions. Even the pro does 10gbps USB where as 4k60 HDR in DP would be 14-20gbps far in excess of it’s USB bandwidth.
