I wonder how it works considering Apple confirmed there wasn’t a U1 chip in the remote. Bluetooth alone? High frequency sound from the phone and/or TV maybe? Regardless, this missing feature cost me ~$40 for an AirTag and case to hold the airtag -____-

It is definitely just Bluetooth. Works exactly the same way it worked with AirPods before they added ultra wide band

“Works exactly the same way it worked with AirPods before they added ultra wide band”

So it works poorly. Im glad they added it, but it’s very unlikely to be helpful with just Bluetooth. I can never use it to find my AirPods.

It’s actually been working really well for me on the latest beta. Seems they’ve improved the system

It’s just a proximity sensor. Phone haptics and visual feedback kick up the closer you get. Nothing more.

The U1 chip provides tons more fidelity in triangulating the target.

I’m shocked this wasn’t available before. I’ve been able to do this with my Shield Pro remote for the better half of a decade.

Huge QOL upgrade to have this feature.

I ended up buying a case for the remote that can also hold an AirTag, super handy when it’s jammed in the couch cushions.
